What is Genealogy?

Genealogy Genealogy is the study of the descent of a person, family, or group from an ancestor or ancestors. Through this field of study it may be possible to track dates of birth and death and where ancestors lived.

What are the benefits of Genealogy?

Genealogy can help to find families that have been torn apart by events such as World War II, where people were displaced by the war. People may discover lost family history and roots they never knew they had.

How can I find out about my Italian family history?

The Italian Society Northern Ireland does not provide a genealogy service, though we suggest the following:

  • Check national archives which are available both online and at government offices.
  • Contact organisations such as the armed forces, as they may keep records about those who served with them.
  • Look through newspaper archives to help you trace birth, death and marriage records. Many newspapers keep archives that are often searchable online.
  • Visit your local library as it may keep the types of records listed above.

Also, if you have documents or access to documents such as wills, census records, church records or cemetery records, they are likely to reveal lots of details about family members.
